Overview
The Socially Inclusive Ageing across the Lifecourse (SIAL) project is a new ESRC funded project investigating social health which includes both objective (e.g. social networks) and evaluative (e.g. loneliness) dimensions and all connection modalities: in person and remote. We define good social health as:- (a) robust levels of supportive social contacts; (b) high quality/fulfilling relationships; (c) engagement in communities as equals; (d) full participation across different social domains (e.g., cultural, political, economic and civic) and (e) relationships which support a sense of belonging.
We focus on older people drawn from three groups: - (a) minority ethnic communities, (b) with LGBTQ+ identity and (c) lifelong disabilities. These three groups are united by their experiences of: - (a) stigma and discrimination across their lifecourse and ageism as they grow older; (b) invisibility as ageing populations; (c) challenging stereotypes and images of ageing, and (d) have sparse research, policy, and practice evidence.
